December 2024 masthead for NWSA Take the Helm newsletter

From the Helm: Debby Grimm, Women's Sailing Foundation presidentThis month is a great time to review 2024. It has been a very busy year. NWSA has:

  • selected Jerelyn Biehl as the BoatUS / NWSA 2024 Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award honoree
  • participated in the US Sailing Leadership Forum
  • helped organize eight AdventureSail® events, introducing nearly 250 girls who would not otherwise have the chance to sail to our sport
  • brought the 2024 National Women’s Sailing Association Conference presented by Allstate Sugar Bowl to New Orleans, hosting over 100 women sailors, introducing additional instructors and welcoming brunch attendees
  • began an affiliation with Mariners Learning System to provide NWSA members a discount to attaining a USCG captain’s license,
  • produced four She Sailor Sea Story social and storytelling events
  • screened applicants for the Sue Corl and Learn to Sail Scholarships.

Rolling into 2025, we look forward to growing our AdventureSail, scholarship programs and conference attendance. Look for registration to open soon for the June 6-8, 2025 conference presented by American Sailing!

Knowledge — Skills — Fun! That’s what we will deliver June 6–8, 2025 at the annual National Women’s Sailing Association Conference presented by American Sailing on Tampa Bay, in St. Petersburg, Florida.

NWSA is excited to invite you to our annual conference presented by American Sailing at the beautiful waterfront campus of University of South Florida, in downtown St. Petersburg.

As you may know, the area was recently affected by two powerful hurricanes. Downtown St. Pete has made great strides in the recovery effort. The great sailing destination will be ready to host you at the NWSA action-packed, fun-filled conference for women sailors.

We are offering new classes and activities. Register early for sought-after learning experiences with limited availability. Sign up for this newsletter to stay informed for registration deals and deadlines.

NWSA/BoatUS Leadership in Women's Sailing — Nominate your hero

BoatUS/NWSA Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award Nominations close February 1
Hurry to honor your sailing hero in 2025

The National Women’s Sailing Association (NWSA) and Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) are accepting nominations for the 2025 BoatUS/NWSA Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award. Since 1999, this national award has sought to recognize an individual with a record of achievement in inspiring, educating, and enriching the lives of women through sailing. Past recipients have included sailing instructors, writers, sailboat racers and cruisers, marine industry professionals, and boating club leaders from a wide variety of professions.

Nominate Your Sailing Hero

Both NWSA and BoatUS help nurture the skills and sense of community necessary for women to grow through their boating lives. It is our privilege each year to receive your nominations. With your input, we recognize a leader in women’s sailing with a long record of upholding a commitment to our shared missions.

The 2025 recipient will be announced at the Annual National Women’s Sailing Association Conference Luncheon in St. Petersburg, Florida, on June 7, 2025.

RSVP for the She Sailor Sea Story—Clean Sweep at bit.ly/NWSA_SSSS_Clean

This She Sailor Sea Story CLEAN SWEEP
sponsored by American Sailing.

RSVP is required

This episode will feature three story tellers, women taking action as leaders, communicators and volunteers to collect, sort, record and remove plastic debris from the shores and ocean — It’s a daunting job!

Under the umbrella of The Rozalia Project, the She Sailor Sea Story Clean Sweep crew worked (sailed and played a bit) from a historic 60ft sailing vessel, American Promise. They collected data and removed (a lot of) plastic debris from islands making up ruggedly lovely landscapes near Rockland, Maine.

s/v American Promise is a Ted Hood designed yacht used by Dodge Morgan in 1985–1986 for a record-breaking 150-day, 27,000-mile solo circumnavigation of the planet. American Promise was then used as an offshore sail training vessel for the United States Naval Academy. American Promise currently acts as the Rozalia Project’s mothership during work addressing issues that affect ocean health in New England’s coastal waters and beyond.

Hear the Clean Crew’s personal stories. Stay longer for socializing and a happy half-hour.
