Spotlight on Sheila McCurdy

If you were to Google Sheila McCurdy, you would scroll through volumes about her sailing life and accomplishments. Words like icon, award, and legend are seen in the many headlines. She has decades of notable sailing accomplishments, and still she is generous. She has offered to share her vast experience, knowledge and teaching skills with women participating in the National Women’s Sailing Conference on June 3.

Read more about Captain McCurdy here.

Thank you Captain Sheila McCurdy.

Girl Recognized with Hanson Rescue Medal

US Sailing’s Safety at Sea Committee awarded a Hanson Rescue Medal and a citation to Alex Fisher, a 13 year-old sailor. Fisher saved the life of her shipmate, who had fallen overboard during a race in 2021. The rescue took place when she was only 12. Alex was crewing for an older male skipper who suffered a life-threatening medical issue resulting in him capsizing their small boat. Alex towed her skipper to shore, swimming while protecting his airway. (He was not wearing a life jacket). When the skipper was safely in the hands of an emergency medical team, she re-rigged their boat and sailed back to the Mission Bay Yacht Club unassisted.

Ms. Fisher distinguished herself as a sailor and as a credit to her family, yacht club and sailing in general. This young woman no doubt has a bright future before her. US Sailing recognized Fisher on Friday, February 16, at the San Diego Association of Yacht Clubs’ monthly meeting with the Rescue Medal.
